i turned 30, got an amazing party!

Posted in: personal stuff

October 27 2011

Wow!! I don’t even know where to start with this one! Well for starters, if we’re friends on facebook you might have noticed that 2 weeks ago I had a birthday. A big one! 30!! We knew that meant we must celebrate but when? Let me apologize to the 12 brides and grooms I politely told we were not available on October 22, 2011. Sorry! I had really no clue about this party other than the “when” and “who’s”. The “what” and the “where” was a big surprise.

Among many others who I’ll get to I must first and foremost thank my wife Kris Ann. She pulled off what will go into the books as simply an absolutely amazing night. Who would have thought you could rent out the observation deck of the Corning tower? We partied at the highest point in downtown Albany! It doesn’t get much better than that folks! Anyway, with a little help from our friend Christine Wheat and some great ideas Kris Ann and her were able to lock down one of the most locked down locations in this city! These girls outdid themselves. Obviously Kris Ann used our very own Jenny Dempsey Shea for all the invites and fun signage at the party. Jenny did an amazing job on everything. Big thanks to Mike Frodey of Clifton Park Rental for suppling all the lounge furniture, lighting, red carpet and stanchions! The place looked amazing. More thanks to Kris Ann’s staff at Fleurtacious Designs for setting up and making this event look amazing. I know Kris Ann summoned our friends too so thanks to you guys as well. I can’t begin to let everyone know how grateful I am you all came together to hook up this amazing event. I seriously wish I could turn 30 every month (I’m sure my friends do as well) because it was so fun!! To say we all had a blast would be the understatement of the century. I don’t know how many people came up and told me how amazing my wife is. I agree! Kris Ann, you’re the bomb. I love you. I love all my friends and family who made it out on 10/22/11 to celebrate with me! Last but not least I must thank Andrew Franciosa of Clark+Walker Studio for capturing these images for me. Andrew also runs a great website called Keep Albany Boring, I recommend you head over and check that out too.

Again, thank you all!!! I got nothing but love for ya!
Peace,

joe | jp | joey

The location 42 floors high in downtown Albany. The “joe | jp | joey” thing was funny and I loved it. It made sense because there were people from all parts of my 30 years who all call me those names!

I thought this was awesome! My good friend Dominick Purnomo came up with the “blog stalker” cocktail. If you’ve been to his restaurant dp An American Brasserie you know they’re known for some amazing food but also the best drink menu in the city. I just wonder will the “blog stalker” be part of one of their seasonal drink menus? You’ll have to go down and see!

A cupcake tower complete with a Rolex box cake top. Lisa from Gourmet Confections is the bomb! You should check her out for your weddings cakes/cupcakes.

Before you made it 42 flights up you had to stop on the red carpet and get paparazzi’d up!

I love her.

Not a bad place to celebrate huh? What a view!!

If I only was a State Police Officer(s) who actually monitored my party I can imagine how funny that was.

A must have DJ Playground on the 1’s n 2’s.. this is Albanys hottest hiphop DJ. Thanks so much for making the party so fun! Everyone kept telling me how great the DJ was!!

Thanks to drop it MODERN for sending this backdrop to Kris Ann for the party! It was perfect!! Also I love the official quote of Hayden Yund. You’re “DOIN IT!”

I love this one of me and my awesome and beautiful wife (fresh from Make Me Fabulous)

Ha!

Mr Andrew Franciosa (the photog for the night)

My other two ladies blog debuts. Sister Robin and Mom (Theresa)..

Even Christine Wheat let her hair down!! Love you C Dub!

Big Joe letting loose with our Elario Photography girls Jenny and Hayden.

Future Elario bride on the left? Congrats on your engagement Janelle (mega blog stalker)

Jenny !!

You might find this crew chowing down chicken wings on Sundays..

One last image of me and my awesome, incredible, talented, beautiful and caring wife. Love you!

March 6 2011

No way! I can’t believe it was a year ago today when we tied the knot. We really had an incredible day! Thinking back, I can’t believe how quick this year went by. It really seems like we were just preparing and having final meetings. This first year of marriage truly has been wonderful. Not a day goes by that I take our life for granted. I’m looking forward to many more years of this and getting all old together. Marriage rocks! I highly recommend it people.

For you new blog stalkers here are some fun visuals from our big day.

2 days before our wedding I blogged a little “preview” blog. Sharing our vendors, why we chose them, etc… Good info here.

On March 10th Al Woodard posted the video that made “all of Albany cry”. Grab some tissues.

Later that month the fabulous Jessica Claire blogged out wedding. Wonderful images!

Then our other fabulous photographer Kamee June blogged her images as well. More wonderful images!

Lastly. I blogged about why I think you potential brides need video with yet another look at our recap. More goodness.

Peace,
JP

Just a favorite of mine from the big day. March 6, 2010..

trust me, you need video

Posted in: Random, personal stuff

January 10 2011

Hey peeps! Sometimes I get thoughts and I just want to share them with you. This post is really directed to all the future brides and grooms out there. Whether we’re shooting your wedding or not I want to share this piece of advice to with you all. Today’s topic is video and why you need it…

So many time’s I sit in my office meeting with brides and grooms or even on the phone. I always ask them this question. “Are you having a videographer at your wedding?” The answer is usually 50/50. Some couples know its super important and are 100% dead set on it. Some couples say tell me they don’t think they’d watch it more than once. That answer is totally not true, you’ll watch it more than once. I just received my video back in late December and I think we’ve hit double digits in plays and its only the 3rd week in January. Then I have some couples who unfortunately video does not fit within their budget and I understand that, maybe when it get’s closer to your date you’ll have extra funds and if you’re lucky a really incredible videographer will be available.

My personal opinion is you will want your ceremony, vows, rings, readings etc covered. You’ll also want your cocktail hour footage, intros, first dance, toasts, parent dances and cake cutting. If you’re doing a first look you’ll want to capture that as well. After receiving my video I have to say for me it completes the day. Sure I have incredible photos to cherish from our day but now I can see it all in motion and hear it. It’s a whole new and different experience when you sit down to watch your wedding video for the first time. As a photographer I can only capture so much. I can make time stand still and you can paint a picture of the sound and feelings of whats happening but with video it really completes the story. For me it was watching Kris Ann’s father walk her down the aisle, hearing the readings and vows and ceremony music. So much happens at once it really is all a blur. Also I enjoyed hearing our toasts, watching my dance with my mother and just seeing peoples smiles and laughs throughout the video.

A couple quick examples..

I did a wedding this summer that had one of the funniest toasts I’ve ever seen only to find no videographer in the house to professionally capture it with not only a solid shot but solid audio. In my opinion a flip camera (even if its hd) ain’t cutting it. Another time back in 2008 we shot a great wedding with the most incredible first dance I ever saw. I mean this was dancing with the stars type stuff and not one video camera in the house. I know that couple regrets not having a video. One more, when I went to a brides page on facebook who’s wedding I shot this year for something I noticed this image below. This post on facebook was the inspiration of this whole blog post, I felt awful reading it and then was compelled to share my thoughts with you all.

Lastly this post isn’t about pushing my videographer friends or pals. It’s about educating you guys on something I feel gets overlooked and shouldn’t. If you read this post and want my recommendation on a videographer I’d be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Peace,
JP

Here is a video recap of our wedding that Al Woodard filmed..

Wow, Just like your photography in motion, Lovin the stainless Daytona too… Congrats as you would say.

  2. amy laurin (01.20.11)

I had a video and it is the first (HUGE) bit of advice I give to all my friends who get engaged. Everyone always tries to tell me it costs too much but, in my opinion, how can you possibly pay ALL of this money for a wedding and not be able to go back and see it? I tell them it is like buying a 2 ct. diamond but not buying the platinum to hold it. It makes NO sense to me! AND you miss so much of what goes on when it is your own wedding day. AND, MOST importantly, how can you show your kids someday if you don’t have this footage??? It is PRICELESS!! That is how I usually REALLY get my friends to get suckered in—what I call a NO-brainer!! I feel thankful I have a video but wish mine was as great as yours! We have Dave playing but it can’t come close!! WOW! Al is simply amazing! Every clip I have seen done by him takes my breath away—for real!

  3. Ellen (01.16.11)

    AMAZING!!!

  4. Kristin Parker (01.13.11)

I completely agree! Video is a MUST! Our video is so special to us. Our wedding was June 12 and my grandmother suddenly passed away October 10, 2010. Thank goodness for that video because we have visuals of her with us on our wedding day!

  5. Jamie (01.12.11)

that is such a wonderful video! and i love your jump for joy near the end!!!! so lovely. Thankfully I’m not married so I still have a chance to have an amazing photographer and videographer if the day ever comes :D :D thanks for sharing that video, and your opinion on having a video :)

  6. ny maids (01.12.11)

Very nice video! When the music started, I’m already in-love with it. You certainly know how to make a point. And the mash up between colored and then turn to black & white…wow!

  7. carla schlist (01.12.11)

married oct 2009 and had a friend do it because we kept procrastinating and saying a videographer is an “if we have enough money in the budget for it” decision. luckily, our friend is a creative director so he did a great job! we still watch the DVD and relive the moments and (for both of us) the feelings come flooding back: music, laughter, the pure EMOTION of it all. AND it’s a good study tool for my husband when i tell him i want to re-do our first dance at our future anniversary parties ;)

  8. Alayne (01.12.11)

OMG, I cry everytime I see this video! Love it!

  9. natalie (01.11.11)

nicely put jp..I can’t wait to see my wedding video!! AND Al did such a nice job with the snippet of yours and Kris Ann’s…loved every minute. you two are awesome.

  10. Liz (01.11.11)

WOW! Al your work is spectacular! Its videos like these that make me wish I could do it all over again.

  11. Laura (01.10.11)

Wish you were a big time blogger back in 2007 and I had seen this post back then. LOVE our Elario photos but miss the video for ALL of the reasons you mentioned above.

  12. Kate (01.10.11)

I am so happy we were able to have video at our wedding. Future Brides and Grooms, it is a MUST have. The day is highly anticipated, and it is one of the most wonderful days of your life; to have beautiful pictures and a video to capture those feelings is priceless. Al, this video brought tears to my eyes, great work!!

  13. isabel (01.10.11)

    AMAZzzinng!

  14. Al Woodard (01.10.11)

    Bravo – Absolutely – No Doubt – That’s Right – See What I’m Say’in – Yeah-Word – I Hear That – For Real – You Know That – What – You Know This – Nuff Said – Amen!

  15. Mona (01.10.11)

Definitely agree. A video brings back emotions in a totally unique way when done properly. I will admit that I was one of those people who really didn’t think we would need or want one, but then clearly changed my mind. To loosely quote Al “The day when people really want a wedding video is the day after their wedding”.

  16. joe Elario (01.10.11)

    . . .Thanks for posting , special moments & days . .MUST , be captured by true – full time – professional’s , not weekend shooters / relatives / friends , PERIOD .

  17. Nicole (01.10.11)

Couldn’t agree more! We are looking so forward to seeing our video from Al. Future brides: No one does it better than JP and Joe and Al Woodard…They are the “A” team! Good luck to all of you planning.

November 12 2010

I don’t even know where to start with this one gang. Well a little history for those who are new here. I love the Dave Matthews Band, I’ve been going to shows since 1999 and look forward to seeing them multiple times in a year. If my schedule permits and its close enough I’m there. I also love photography (duh). When I used to shoot Alive at Five’s and Tulip Festival concerts for the City of Albany I always wondered what it would be like to photograph a band of this caliber. When I shot for them I always left those gigs with a smile on my face because I loved photographing bands and whatnot. There was that one time on stage when I was like “man I wish this was the Dave Matthews Band”. I mean I know the band, not personally, but I know the things they do and who to shoot when and why. It’s sort of like photographing weddings because I know what to expect and when to expect it. So many concert experiences went by and I watched many photographers capture images that probably meant nothing to them but a photo credit in a local paper or whatever. For me, getting to shoot this band was truly something I only dreamed of doing. That being said the fairy godmother and a former bride of mine Sarah made my dream come true. Sarah works for the City of Albany and made a few call’s for me. To say I was ecstatic when she called me with the good news would be a complete understatement. So I have to thank Sarah big time for making me feel “so damn lucky”. So with that, lets get into this post!

Peace,
JP

ps.. Nothing is for sale so don’t ask. I am not allowed to sell prints. This is strictly for your viewing pleasure. If you repost anywhere do not crop my logo and link back to this post. Thanks!

No I wasn’t stalking Mr Matthews. I simply parked in the right spot at the right time and captured this. When I took it I looked at my wife and said  ”This is my opener for the blog post.”

Some details.. This is referred by Dave as “the tiny guitar” a crazy fan like myself knows there are only a handful of songs he plays on this. Don’t you love the picks?

This band has one of the most ridiculous horn sections out there.. I just love how these epic instruments wait to be played..

A few more details.. their lighting was insane at this show.

The moment where the place erupts in cheers. I imagine this has to make you feel good when taking the stage.. I had 2 songs to shoot which was just shy of 16 minutes.. this is what I captured…

A sip of tea (or perhaps something else?) and then its time..

For the fans he opened with Squirm.. for the photographers I shot all my images ISO 3200 1D MK4 5D MK2 and wide open on whatever lens I had on..

drum beats louder…

drum beats louder.. Carter is seriously a machine up there.

I love all this crazy lighting..

The sound that comes from this mans guitar is just nutty…

One of my favorites from the whole show..

classic Dave scream!

The infamous boots…

After a surprisingly short opener song it was onto “You might die trying”.. at this point I had 9 minutes to tear it up and shoot like a maniac.

Stefan Lessard is the man and the most accessible band member. Follow his twitter if you’re a fan.

Oh you know I brought the old fish eye.. I bought this lens years back strictly for concert shooting.

Classic Dave Matthews with eyebrow thing
]

I think this is making my wall..

Another eyebrow thing…

Oh hey Dave, I see you too.

Boyd Tinsley on the violin..

Another compilation..

Another fav.. I just love the fisheye look in b&w..

Love it..

Starting to get down..

Yes, it sounded that good!

The Dave Matthews Band.. 2010 style..

One more of Stefan..

I was totally dancing a little while shooting this stuff.

and I’ll end with this.. classic Dave. What an experience!

  7. Samantha (12.31.10)

I was at this show, front row on the floor, best night of my life. Dave was animated and there was good good energy. I’ve seen many DMB shows but this night has special meaning to me because I was so close. I captured some pics on my cell but obviously nothing special. Thank you for capturing some special memories for me, I’m new to your blog (and loving it) – this is the first time I saw these pics and they honestly bought tears to my eyes. Thank you for shooting some amazing pics of Dave and his special quirks that bring back memories of one of the best show of my life (thus far anyway) – thanks!

  8. rhonda (11.22.10)

just simply – AMAZING!!! Hot damn!

  9. Paul Malo (11.22.10)

These images are absolutely awsome. As usual, I was spinning a wedding reception the night of this concert. Funny, I just read Woodards comments. It reminded me that he was the one that spotted Dave when we were all working up at the Sagamore. You and I were hanging by my set-up talking about how cool it would be if Dave walked by and Al runs into the tent and says ” Dude, Dave Matthews is right outside”. Classic. Great photos, JP. You should do this for a living.

  10. Heather Brulez (11.20.10)

AhMazing. I’m so incredibly jealous. You rocked this shoot!

  11. brian rickey (11.14.10)

AMAZING SHOTS! Made me feel like I was there. What an opportunity that was! I am guess you are going to put one of those up in your office right?

  12. Jamie O. (11.13.10)

    Congrats!!

  13. jm (11.13.10)

. . couple of years ago JP & Dave met at the Sagamore Hotel . . think they need to meet up again before the 2012 season .
    Great job here JP .

  14. Rudi (11.13.10)

Nice work! You know, I never heard of the Dave Matthews Band untill I saw your famous Natalie & Ryan engagement shoot video (watched it many, many times, it’s so inspiring). When I first saw that video I searched for the song on youtube by typing the lyrics. And you are right; the horn sections are crazy!

  15. Amy Laurin (11.13.10)

i had a feeling you had fun at dave but had no clue you had THIS much fun! as a fellow dave fanatic…all I can say is WOW! Been seeing him non-stop ever since I went to see him at a small bar in montreal around 1993. fun times!

  16. Chris (11.12.10)

What an awesome night that started with Happy Hour!! The show was awesome and these pics are absolutely amazing!! Well done JP, well done!!

  17. Carly, (11.12.10)

thanks for bringing the show to us..Sorry we couldn’t hear the audio…great shots!

  18. Mona (11.12.10)

JPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!! I am like beaming down here in NYC looking at these pics. I seriously feel like I was there at the concert. You caught all dave’s classic looks, everything. I swear I could almost hear their music playing through the pictures. Dude, you should totally try to get in touch with whomever from their team might be interested in the photos (DMB website? Album? I’m just saying). These are 120% amazing. Can’t say enough. Congratulations on an amazing opportunity. I can picture you with a grin a mile wide on your face just loving those moments. Well done my friend, well deserved.

  19. Alayne (11.12.10)

Must say wasn’t sure if I was gonna love these as much as I do your wedding photos, but yup, uh huh, you totally killed it ! They are really FABULOUS!

  20. Christine (11.12.10)

I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more envious of someone in my life! :-) These are fantastic shots!!! With these shots, you may have just topped yourself after my brother and Sheila’s wedding this summer….lol….jk. Seriously though, these are phenomenal.

  21. Sarah H (11.12.10)

awesome pics man!! what an opportunity!! we had a great time hanging with you at the show!

  22. Lisa (11.12.10)

These images are amazing!!! What a great opportunity. I am so jealous that he is only touring on the east coast! Thanks for making me feel like I was there.

  23. Meghan (11.12.10)

WOW!! AMAZING! I was at the show as well and you captured every awsome moment! Congratualtions on such an great opportunity! I am a HUGE silent blog stalker but for this post I just had to comment. I am a big fan of yours and a big fan of DMB so this was a great duo to look though! It’s so cool to see pictures of a show I was at, because I know my little digital camera barely caught any of it! Thank you! :-)

  24. Al Woodard (11.12.10)

WOW!!! JP, I have no idea how you captured some of these shots from where you were located in pit! What a way to close out your 2010 season. I was at the show and I echo your sentiments exactly – “classic Dave. What an experience!”

  29. Nicole (11.12.10)

As a mostly silent blog stalker, and an enormous DMB fan… i must say this is truly fantastic. Congratulations on such an amazing opportunity!!!

  30. Lauren (11.12.10)

First off I am a huge fan of your work. I am a blog stalker to say the least. When I found out you were going to be shooting the DMB concert I could not believe it. You just jumped even higher on my list (if that was possible). As a fellow dave fan and concert goer I am so impressed with the way you captured the personality of the band. The shots you have of carter on the drums and closeups of dave are some of the best I have ever seen. The colors you captured were amazing, but the black and white shots are incredible!! You totally just pumped me up to see him tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden. Thanks for sharing these with us!! :]

  31. Sarah (11.12.10)

    YOU ROCKED IT!!!! so awesome!

  32. becky! (11.12.10)

you are the luckiest man on the planet… i am so jealous of how close you were to dave matthews… loved the pictures, I felt like I was at the concert seeing as I had to miss out on this one :(.. my favorite is the last one, SO classic Dave!! :) Sweet job jp!

  33. Shannon Thornburg (11.12.10)

I know how excited you must have been for this! Amazing shots, but I knew it wouldn’t be anything less than stellar :)

  34. Tiffany (11.12.10)

Oh man…I love Dave too, these images gave me the chills, you are SO DAMN LUCKY!!! you did an incredible job!

  35. Brianna (11.12.10)

Joe, I had goosebumps from the very first picture. This is an amazing post, you really were so damn lucky :-) Just absolutely amazing, seriously.

  36. Steve Staples (11.12.10)

Wow ! A great photographer and a great band. VERY VERY enjoyable post!

  37. Julia (11.12.10)

I saw your Fb post the day you shot these guys. I’m so glad you took the opportunity to use your love of the band to photograph them. This is exactly what it feels like for me to shoot bands – that giddiness is every time. The lead up to the first three songs and all the seconds we get to be up there and a part of the music is why I love it so much. I think you get it too. Beautiful captures Joe!

  38. natalie (11.12.10)

incredible! i love all of them! now….how do we get dave to see them?

  39. Melissa (11.12.10)

unreal. You will never top this post for me!

  40. Bob (11.12.10)

    sick!

  41. Mark (11.12.10)

Such an awesome job and what an awesome show. Had a great time and I can’t believe we have to wait until 2012 for the next one. You killed it.

  42. Melissa (11.12.10)

    Amazing shots, JP!

  43. Kris Ann (11.12.10)

LOVE IT!!! I was so happy for you that you had this opportunity…. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it opens more door for you!

  44. Mary (11.12.10)

Pretty amazing, Joe. You captured so many great facial expressions!!

  45. Jason V. (11.12.10)

Oh My God!!!!! I knew you would get some great stuff, but these are just ridiculous! 10 times better than any of the shots on the band’s own website. I will be looking at these over and over again all day! actually, until SPAC 2012 :)

  46. Jason Merritt (11.12.10)

Wow dude…what an amazing set of photos, JP. This is my first post on any of your blogs but I look at them all the time. How can you not? Like you, I’ve been following DMB for years (‘98…got ya beat a bit there;) and know what to expect and when to expect it when it comes to them…I just need the photography skills now!!! I just wanted to say great job, as always. These photos are sensational (even to the non-DMB fan)!!!

Awesome shots. I saw you down in front of the stage. I’m so jealous that you were that close to him. I would do anything to be in front of the stage like that.
